Malik

If you are standing in front of one of Maliks works of art you are captured by a slight shiver. This something that we call reality suddenly seems strangely distorted. There seems to be a partition of our perception, held together by an ironical and sometimes philosophical view on our life.
Maliks attention focuses on the interplay of nature and technique and also the human action and thinking. Frozen moments go hand in hand with long-lasting and often hidden processes of the human behaviour pattern. It is an abstract picture of reality in its whole tragedy and humour. This tightrope walk between happiness and horror is the central theme in Maliks work. In everything there is fierceness, a life form that seems to have gotten out of hand. Sometimes it is hidden in the details, and sometimes it is galloping towards the viewer like an apocalyptic white horse.
The viewer is confronted with highs and lows, with fascination and disgust, with beginning and destruction. There is always new life being created out of destruction. Maliks work allows us a glimpse in this room of metamorphoses. Meanwhile Malik is chameleonic in his ability to find new ways of expression. The only repetition he allows himself is within his own style.
It is the job of the artist to remind us of the things that we have always known but that we have forgotten in a world of stimulus satiation and shortage of time. Malik reminds us of this knowledge with a slight shiver.


Curriculum Vitae

Marc „Malik“ Furer wird 1977 in Aarau geboren. Schon im frühen Alter macht sich bei ihm ein Interesse an Farben und Formen bemerkbar, insbesondere in Bereichen, die sich mit fremden Welten und andersartigen Figuren beschäftigen. Um 1992 weckt Graffiti sein Interesse. Die Subkultur zieht ihn in ihren Bann und die Sprühdose wird für mehrere Jahre zu seinem beliebtesten Stilmittel. Aus dieser Zeit stammt der Künstlername Malik. Eine unkonventionelle Laufbahn nimmt so ihren Anfang.
Nach der Matura besucht Malik den gestalterischen Vorkurs an der Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel, um danach mit dem Studium Bildnerisches Gestalten an der Kunsthochschule Bern zu beginnen. Nach etwas mehr als einem Jahr muss er jedoch feststellen, dass er sich vertan hatte. Sein Weg würde in eine andere Richtung verlaufen, und so beendet er die Ausbildung, um sich fortan seinen eigenen Projekten zu widmen. Der Schritt trägt Früchte. Kurz darauf wird die Firma Subart ins Leben gerufen und Malik wird zum Produktdesigner.
Als tüftelnder Allrounder beschäftigt er sich mit diversen Techniken, hauptsächlich Malerei, Aerosol Art und Zeichnungen. Seine Vielseitigkeit zeigt sich aber auch in Skulpturen und Objekten verschiedenster Art. Seit 2000 arbeitet Malik als freischaffender Künstler und Gestalter.
Maliks Werke sind in Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen zu sehen. Er wird regelmässig mit öffentlichen und privaten Projekten betraut, was von Fassadenmalerei über Innenraumgestaltung bis hin zu Illustrationen oder Brand-Designs reicht.
Im Jahr 2005 wird Malik Art Director des internationalen Kunstnetzwerks Style Instinct.
